It was the rainy season in the Savannah. I've lived alone almost my whole life. This is no place for a solitary wild dog. I had to find a trustworthy animal. Or else I'd be dessert for some larger animal.
I'm high on the food chain, but not high enough. I've been in too many battles with warthogs, cheetahs, and hyenas. One day, I will lose. But I will lose trying, without a pack of loyal friends.
Once the rain had subsided, I decided to unvail from the cover of a thorn bush. My territory was no larger than two square miles long. So I went to check the border scent. It was strong on the left side, but with putrid cheetah scent. I remarked that side well, and went to a tree to rest.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next morning, the breeze was a frigid sense to my unkempt coat. As I was grooming myself, I heard a squwak. It sounded like a dying hog, and I was in the mood for some scavenging.
I walked stifffly up to the lifeless pig. As I crouched down to take a bite, something intense hit my head. I will not be afraid. Is what I told myself, and I never am.
